Satoshi Kon, the visionary filmmaker famous for his works such as , "Millennium Actress", and "Paprika", has passed away. He was in the process of creating his next film, tentatively titled "The Dreaming Machine" when he succumbed to pancreatic cancer on August 24, 2010. Our condolences go out to Kon's family, friends, colleagues, and fans. He will be sorely missed throughout the world.R.I.P. Satoshi Kon

Otakon has announced two more very special musical guests for this year in addition to the ever-wonderful shamisen duo the Yoshida Brothers and hip-hop group Home Made Kazoku! Yoshiki (X/X Japan) and Sugizo (Luna Sea, X Japan) will be performing an acoustic set during the Masquerade! We won't have a full staff at Otakon this year, but we WILL have a photographer on hand to catch the concerts, h.Naoto fashion show, and other events where possible! Otakon will be held at the Baltimore Convention Center July 30-August 1 in Maryland.Keeping with convention news, NekoCon has announced its first round of guests for this year! Akemi Solloway has been teaching Japanese in the UK for years, in addition to organizing several Japanese culture events in Britain. NekoCon 13 will mark her very first US debut! Cristina Vee (Kannazuki no Miko, Rozen Maiden, and Magical Girl Lyrical Nahona) and Garth Graham (webcomic artist) will also be attending! NekoCon will be held at the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton, VA November 5-7 this year.
AnimeUSA, although still months away, has begun announcing their guests! Friends of WOLR Radio FM and all-around awesome band echostream will be performing during the weekend! You can check out shots of them from a previous appearance here. DJ Speed Demon will also be spinning at the dance/rave! It was also just announced that pioneering visual kei rock group 12012 will be performing live in concert! More details about their show, brought to you by Jhouse-Rock ENT, will be released shortly. In terms of non-musical guests, the very first one to be announced is voice actress/director/music director Brina Palencia (Fullmetal Alchemist, Shin Chan, and Hell Girl just to name a few)! The con has also announced the beginning of its very own blog! The blog can be found here: http://blog.animeusa.org/ AUSA will be held in the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, VA November 12-14 (the very week after NekoCon).
In musical news, Kaya and Kanon Wakeshima will be releasing new material on July 28! Singer and performer Kaya’s new single will be titled Awilda and will be centered around a female pirate theme (see, even he thinks pirates are better than ninjas!) and will be a techno-y dance track. You can get a sneak peek of his new costume on his website at http://kaya-rose.com/pc/index.php. Young vocalist and cellist Kanon Wakeshima will be releasing a brand new album on the same day! Not much is known about the album, to be titled Lolitawork Libretto, but here’s hoping she’ll dazzle her listeners again with her doll-like appearance and serious skills on the cello!
In tour news, rock band D’espairsRay will be heading out on a worldwide tour called “Human-clad Monsters”. They will be hitting up North America starting in Hollywood, CA on August 3 and ending in Houston, TX on August 17 before heading back to Japan to continue the tour. In other exciting show news, as many of you know X Japan is scheduled to play at Lollapalooza in Chicago, which runs August 6-8! They'll be playing the main stage on Sunday and are scheduled to start at 4pm. While we won't be an official presence at the event, you may get to enjoy a concert report from a particularly lucky member of our staff!

The show must go on, and despite a snow storm, it did as GPKism and Seileen took the stage in Philadelphia on Friday. Fans even lined up in advance, with snow already falling!
